Situated north of the Merritt Parkway, the backcountry offers large luxury Greenwich real estate and properties amid extraordinarily beautiful countryside, with four-acre zoning throughout much of the area and extensive open space preserved through the efforts of the Greenwich Land Trust and other conservation organizations. Numerous rivers, lakes and ponds highlight the idyllic landscape along with winding country roads, lush woodlands and meadows and dramatic glacial carved gorges. This area also provides the location of most of the town’s golf courses and much of its parkland including the Audubon property, with its impressive new headquarters and study center. Conyers Farm, an equestrian-oriented enclave, is the home of the internationally known Greenwich Polo Club. The backcountry of Greenwich offers a truly unique locale, a pastoral haven less than 35 miles from Manhattan.
Parks, Clubs and Amenities: Back Country Greenwich is home to the members only Stanwich Club, Fairview Country Club and Tamarack Country Club. Residents have easy access to the 262 acre Babcock Preserve, a forested property open to the public for walking jogging, cross-country skiing, picnicking and horseback riding. Griffith E Harris Golf Course, Greenwich’s only municipal golf course, is an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones designed course located off King Street.
Schools: In 2018 Parkway Elementary School is the smallest school with less than 225 students and has an accompanying low student to teacher ratio. Private schools include Whitby School and Stanwich School.
Transportation: Back Country is known for its beautiful estates and vistas, but it was considered as a possible site for the United Nations for a reason. Just far enough away not to be harassed by ancillary traffic, western back country has access to major thoroughfares. The Merritt Parkway, the predominant artery, feeds into the Hutchison River Parkway with access to both I-684 and I-287. Westchester Airport along the western boarder is a highly desirable convenience, with service by major airlines and for private jets.
Services and Features: Audubon Greenwich encompasses seven nature sanctuaries in Greenwich, including the 285 main sanctuary, a 135 acre Fairchild Wildflower Sanctuary, and Hemlock Gorge 37 acres along the Byram River western branch. The Round Hill Volunteer fire department is on Round Hill Road north of the Merritt Parkway.
